How Long Does a New Boiler Installation Take?
A straight boiler swap on the same system is usually one day's work. Switching boiler type, moving the boiler, or upgrading the system takes longer. Here's a realistic timeline guide for each scenario.

The Short Answer: One to Three Days
Most domestic boiler installations are completed in one working day. A like-for-like combi boiler replacement — removing the old boiler and fitting a new one of the same type in the same location — is standard work for a Gas Safe registered engineer and typically takes 4–8 hours from start to finish. More complex scenarios take longer, and understanding which category your job falls into helps you plan realistically.
Scenario 1: Straight Combi Swap (Most Common)
Typical time: 4–8 hours (one day)
This is the most common boiler replacement: remove the old combi boiler, fit a new one of the same type in the same location, connect to the existing pipework and flue. The engineer drains the relevant section of the system, disconnects the old boiler, makes the pipework connections to the new unit, fits and seals the new flue terminal, and commissions the boiler — filling the system, setting the pressure, checking combustion, and completing the manufacturer's commissioning form.
Factors that can extend this: a new flue if the terminal position needs to change, a magnetic filter being fitted (strongly recommended with a new boiler), or system flushing if the heating circuit shows signs of sludge contamination. A power flush before a new boiler installation adds half a day to a day to the project but protects the new heat exchanger from damage.
Scenario 2: Converting from System Boiler to Combi
Typical time: 1.5–2 days
Converting from a system boiler (with a hot water cylinder) to a combi boiler removes the cylinder from the equation — the combi produces hot water on demand without stored water. The additional work involves: decommissioning and removing the hot water cylinder, capping off or removing the associated pipework, and possibly removing the cold water storage tank from the loft if the property no longer needs it. The freed airing cupboard space is a common reason homeowners choose this conversion.
Not all properties are suitable for a combi conversion — homes with high simultaneous hot water demand (multiple bathrooms in use at the same time) may find a combi boiler's flow rate insufficient. Our engineers always discuss suitability before recommending a conversion. Our guide on combi vs system boiler covers this in detail.
Scenario 3: Moving the Boiler to a New Location
Typical time: 1.5–2 days
Relocating a boiler — typically from an airing cupboard to an outside wall, or from a kitchen to a utility room — involves running new gas pipework to the new location, re-routing system pipework connections, and creating a new flue penetration. The gas work adds time and requires careful planning — particularly if the new boiler position requires a longer gas run or a flue route through multiple walls.
Scenario 4: Full Heating System Upgrade
Typical time: 3–5 days
Where the existing system is old enough to warrant full replacement — new boiler, new pipework runs, new radiators, new controls — the job is a multi-day installation. This typically applies to properties with original 1970s pipework, systems converting from gravity-fed to fully pumped, or major heating extensions. The boiler installation itself may take a day; system work around it takes the rest of the time.
What Happens on Installation Day
A professional installation follows a clear sequence: system drain-down, removal of old boiler and associated components, pipework modifications and connections, new boiler fitting and flue installation, system refill with inhibitor, commissioning (pressure testing, combustion analysis, controls setup), documentation completion, and a walkthrough with you covering controls operation and maintenance requirements. On completion you receive the commissioning certificate and warranty registration confirmation.
For your boiler service schedule: most manufacturers require the first annual service within 12 months of installation to maintain the warranty. Book it before you need it — summer appointments are available without the autumn rush. Book an installation quote or call 02039514510.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I have hot water during the installation?
During a same-day combi swap: the heating and hot water will be off for most of the working day. The engineer will typically have the new boiler operational by late afternoon. For multi-day installations, our engineers restore hot water at the end of each day where possible — discuss this when booking.
Do I need to be at home during the installation?
Yes — the engineer needs access to the boiler location, the gas meter, and usually multiple rooms for pipework access. Someone needs to be available to receive the commissioning handover at the end of the day. Many homeowners use the installation day to work from home.
Is a power flush always needed before a new boiler?
Not always — but it's recommended whenever the existing system shows signs of sludge or limescale contamination. Most boiler manufacturers specify that the system must be clean and flushed at installation to validate the warranty. If our engineer's assessment suggests the system is contaminated, we'll discuss this before starting. Fitting a new boiler onto a dirty system typically causes heat exchanger problems within 2–3 years.
How long does a new boiler warranty last?
Most major manufacturers (Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal) offer warranties of 5–12 years depending on the model and whether the installation is registered at point of commissioning. Annual servicing by a Gas Safe engineer is required to maintain the warranty throughout its term. Keep your service records — manufacturers can and do void warranties where service history cannot be demonstrated.
Typical Installation Times
A straightforward like-for-like combi boiler replacement — where the new boiler goes in the same position as the old one and the flue exits through the same wall — is typically a one-day job for an experienced Gas Safe engineer. Most installations of this type are completed within six to eight hours, allowing commissioning, testing, and handover to the homeowner on the same day.
More complex installations take longer. Converting from a regular boiler and cylinder system to a combi boiler involves capping off the tank feeds in the loft, decommissioning the cylinder, and potentially re-routing pipework — this is usually a two-day job. Relocating a boiler to a different wall or room, or moving it from a utility cupboard to a kitchen, adds additional plumbing and flue work that can extend the programme by half a day or more.
Factors That Can Extend the Day
Old pipework that is heavily scaled or corroded may need to be cleaned or replaced before the new boiler can be connected. If the engineer discovers during installation that the system needs a power flush — something that is often only confirmed once the old boiler is removed and the system water is inspected — this adds several hours. Building in a small contingency when planning around work or childcare is always sensible.
Planning Around the Installation
On installation day, you will have no heating or hot water for approximately half the working day as the old boiler is removed and the new one commissioned. Plan accordingly — particularly if young children, elderly residents, or vulnerable occupants are in the household. Your installer should confirm the exact time window in advance. All gas installation work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and the completed installation must be registered on the Gas Safe Register and notified to Building Control (under Part J and Part P of the Building Regulations). Your installer handles this notification — confirm it is included in the installation package before work begins. You will receive a completion certificate, which you should retain as evidence of compliant installation. Call 01733 797074 for new boiler installations across all PE postcodes.
